Find that dangerous Emotet malware
EmoCheck is a free system utility program that enables you to check your PC for any signs of the Emotet malware. Developed by JPCERT/CC or the JPCERT Coordination Center, this tiny open-source tool is a handy malware detection program that will scan your computer and give you reports about its health concerning a specific malware. It can only report, however, and you’ll need to use a malware removal app afterward if it finds anything suspicious.
Can’t hide forever
Emotet is a malware strain and a sophisticated banking Trojan that was first identified back in 2014. It’s infamous for sneaking into your computer to steal sensitive information via spam email and legitimate-looking emails. The way it works is that it will generate a process name from a specific word dictionary and C drive serial number and will be stored in a semi-random folder under %LocalAppData%.
The folder is semi-random because it will not use random characters for its name, but rather a folder name built out of two keywords from a specific list. Thus, most antivirus software can have a hard time trying to track it down—especially when it most often downloads and installs other Trojans. However, with EmoCheck, you can now easily check if your PC has this nasty virus.
To use this tool, simply download it and you will get an EXE file that doesn’t need any installation. Just run it and it will automatically generate a text document report for you. The report will say whether your system has Emotet or not. If you do, you should immediately open Task Manager and terminate the listed process in the report. Then, run your antivirus to check for any lingering malware.
Great for any user
All in all, EmoCheck is a great software to have because of its efficiency, speed, ease of use, and lightness. It doesn’t need to be installed and can be placed in whichever location—and its reports will be placed there automatically, as well. While it’s a shame that it can only detect, the tool is already powerful enough to be able to detect this pesky Trojan. This is a highly recommended program for everyone to have.
